The Truth About Autoimmune Disease
Looking Beyond the Label
By International Healer Omar Botha
The body is not the enemy. My healing perspective looks beyond the diagnosis and asks what may be creating the symptoms in the first place.
Introduction
When someone develops symptoms such as rashes, pain, fatigue, inflammation or neurological problems, they may receive a diagnosis such as eczema, lupus, MS, Hashimoto’s, Graves’, rheumatoid arthritis or ME/CFS.
These names can describe a person's symptoms, but from my healing perspective, a diagnosis does not necessarily explain why the body is reacting, what triggered the problem or what may be needed to support healing.
The body is not broken.
The body is responding to something.
The Four Types of Mystery Illness
Chronic illness can take many forms. In my healing perspective, people often move through several stages before they feel they have found meaningful answers.
1. Illness With No Name
A person experiences real symptoms — pain, fatigue, dizziness, tingling, numbness or skin problems — while tests may fail to identify a clear cause.
Being told that “nothing is wrong” can leave someone without validation or direction.
2. Illness With a Name but No Real Help
Sometimes a diagnosis is given, yet the person continues to struggle despite treatment. Symptoms may be managed while the deeper factors contributing to the condition remain unresolved.
3. Misdiagnosis
Symptoms may sometimes be attributed to hormones, stress, ageing or genetics when other factors have not been fully explored.
From my healing perspective, it is important to remain curious about the underlying influences on the body.
4. A Diagnosis Without the Full Cause
Even when a diagnosis is correct, questions can remain about what initiated the condition and why the body continues to react.
This is where my healing approach looks beyond the label and explores the possible underlying factors.
The Autoimmune Theory — A Different Perspective
The commonly used explanation is that the immune system mistakes the body's own tissues for an enemy and attacks them.
My healing perspective is different. I do not view the body as deliberately attacking itself. I believe the body is constantly trying to protect and preserve itself.
Your body is trying to protect you — not destroy you.
The Viral Perspective
Within the healing framework I use, a viral component — particularly advanced Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) — may be involved in many conditions that are commonly labelled autoimmune.
This perspective proposes that viral activity can affect tissues over time and that the immune system responds with inflammation in an effort to protect the body.
Areas potentially affected within this framework include:
Hashimoto’s & Graves’
Rheumatoid arthritis
Neurological symptoms
Eczema & psoriasis
Examples From My Healing Perspective
- Hashimoto’s & Graves’ — thyroid inflammation associated within this framework with viral activity affecting thyroid tissue.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis — inflammation involving joints and surrounding tissues.
- MS — neurological inflammation associated within this framework with viral activity.
- Lupus — widespread inflammatory activity.
- CFS & Fibromyalgia — viral and neurological stress affecting nerves and muscles.
- Eczema & Psoriasis — inflammatory skin conditions considered within this framework in relation to viral by-products and toxins.
Different labels can describe different expressions of a deeper problem.
My healing approach is to investigate what may be underneath the symptoms rather than stopping at the diagnosis.
The Body Is Not the Enemy
Inflammation is often experienced as the problem, but from my healing perspective it can also represent the body's attempt to respond to something it perceives as harmful.
Your body is constantly adapting, protecting and working toward balance.
Your body is fighting for you.
Your body is on your side. Your body is trying to protect you.
Why So Many People Are Struggling
Many people move through several stages of mystery illness: symptoms are dismissed, a diagnosis is given without a satisfying explanation, treatment may manage symptoms without resolving the deeper issue, and eventually the person is told that the cause is unknown.
This can leave people feeling frightened, frustrated and powerless.
From my healing perspective, understanding the possible underlying factors can bring greater clarity and hope and can open a new direction for healing.
A Whole-Body Healing Approach
My healing work looks at the person as a whole. Depending on the individual, this may include attention to:
Healing foods, hydration and nutritional support
Environmental and dietary exposures
Stress, trauma, fear and emotional wellbeing
Intuitive and energetic healing support
Closing Thoughts
A diagnosis does not define a person. It is one part of a much larger story.
Your body is communicating with you every day. Learning to understand those signals can help you approach your health with greater awareness, compassion and hope.
Look deeper. Listen to your body. Support your healing.
